COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Complete your GMDSS Radio Operator course online! NEMO°’s GMDSS Radio Operator Course combines online simulations, animations, helpful explanations, quizzes and final exam to make your training experience engaging and comprehensive. You will explore the functionality and use of all GMDSS components ranging from daily communication to emergency situations using our suite of HALO° simulators. All text passages include an audio component to assist ESL students. Upon completion of the course, you will have access to your course completion certificate as a record of your training and will be able to access the course at any time to refresh your knowledge or practice on our full suite of GMDSS simulators. This course covers required training and competences in Table A-IV/2 of the STCW Code for GMDSS Radio Operators. GMDSS is mandated for ships internationally by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention.

This course is approved by both the US Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center for US Domestic licenses and for international seafarers by the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administration. When purchasing the course, ensure that you are purchasing the correct version.

Given the number of serious problems experienced in the GMDSS resulting from numerous, often accidental, false distress alerts, training will be provided to ensure the awareness and avoidance of unintentional transmission of false distress alerts, and the procedures which mitigate the effects of false distress alerts following unintentional transmission.

Get Your FCC GMDSS Radio Operator License

DESCRIPTION:

Northeast Maritime Institute is an approved designated examiner for the FCC GMDSS Radio Operator Certificate exams. The FCC requires completion of both the Element 1 and Element 7 exams for issuance of the license, unless you have completed a USCG approved GMDSS course at NMI or another training institution (a copy of your completion certificate will need to be submitted to us).

Upon purchase of this program, you will have access to study questions for both Element 1* and 7, the FCC application package and when you are ready to test, NEMO will enroll you in the Halo Exam Monitoring System which allows you to take your exams remotely, using your computer’s web camera.

*If you have completed a USCG approved GMDSS course, then you only need to prepare for and complete the Element 7 exam.

Basic process after purchasing this module:

  1. Complete the FCC application packet and submit in color with a copy of your photo id
  2. Prepare for your exams by using the provided study questions
  3. Contact NMI when you are ready to test, we will enroll you in our online exam monitoring system (a computer with a web camera is required)
  4. Upon successfully passing your exams (75% required) NMI will submit your paperwork to the FCC for issuance of your license.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Visual Communication: Flashing Lights course introduces you to many aspects of communication on board a vessel. Visual Morse code is a particularly important aspect of communication and is required for anyone looking to acquire their OICNW certification. This course also features the HALO° Flashing Lights Simulator which will assist in the training of practical skills. Course completion will require an online assessment to demonstrate competencies.

The course covers the following subject matter:

  • The Morse code alphabet
  • Visual Morse code
  • The International Code of Signals (PUB 102)
  • How to Flash a signal light to transmit visual Morse code
  • How to decode Morse code signals

This course is required for all candidates who are seeking to acquire their original Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch Certificate of Competence either a raise in grade from Able Bodied Seaman or Able Seafarer-Deck or through an approved program such as Northeast Maritime Institute’s – College of Maritime Science Third Mate Option or through a Federal or State Maritime Academy.

The U.S.C.G. Approval meets the visual signaling requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(vi) and 11.319(a)(4)(vi) if presented within 1 year of completion AND demonstrating the equivalent of assessment 8.2A for an STCW, as amended 2010 endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels 500 GT or more.
